Sleep and Sleep Deprivation

Helen has compiled some interesting reading on sleep deprivation from the web. The authors are people who either seem to be authorities, or racers that have just figured it out hard way. Unfortunately, it looks like there's not a lot that can be done about it (except not depriving yourself). Most of the comments also seem to be geared toward the 24-36 hour Ultra runs (good news for us weekend warriors - anyone who has some ideas for the those doing expedition length races let us know). Anyway, ere are a few of my take away's...

1. Better living through chemicals: caffeine and branched amino acids seem to get a lot of mention, but for caffeine to be effective you need to kick any existing habits about two weeks in advance. Watch out for foods with higher levels of sleep inducing trytophan (all you turkey, cheese or banana lovers).

2. You can't train for it (in fact that could be counter productive/damaging physically), but it doesn't hurt to experience it in training before the race so you know what to expect.

3. Cat naps: 10 to 20 minutes with feet elevated seems to be the norm for a good quick boost. Take the caffeine tabs before you snooze so they kick in about the time you get up. For the longer races it looks like 2 to 3 hours a night is not unusual, but it's a good idea do it on a relatively strict schedule that's somewhat in synch with your normal rest cycles (ie. stop each night between 11:00 and 02:00) to get the max benefit.

But don't take my word for it (I'm definitely "solar powered")… check it yourself in this Word doc.
