First Aid, Safety, and anything else related to backwoods smarts

Now, before you read this page and go do field surgery on your teammate, please realize that we aren't doctors, first aid instructors, or anything else. Right now, this is just a page of links to other information that might help you. There are how-to's, how-not-to's, first aid kit tips, sources of classes, etc. I hope to have a real-live expert write articles for us eventually, but that could take a while as the pay is pretty low. OK, non existant. -Helen

For when you REALLY want to be self sufficient

Rocky Mountain Survival Group

OK, before you think I've gone batty, or cultish, or survivalist, or whatever - There is actually some really cool information on this page. I clicked around to make sure it wasn't a hate group or anything that I thought was too off the edge, and it isn't - they make that clear, in fact. There are all kinds of links on how to's, safety, wilderness medicine/first aid, etc. There's alot on the page so you might have to look hard. No, I'm not a member, and I won't be.

Avalanche Smarts

With the winter training and racing season upon us, it's imperative that we incorporate a bit of respect for the white stuff that's collecting on our front range playground into our outdoor plans. Last winter season ('99-'00), eight people were killed in Colorado avalanches, three of those were killed while snowshoeing near an area on the back side of Berthoud pass where we were considering doing some training for last years Salomon WAR, which was held in the general area. [NOTE: as it turns out, the race course didn't go near the slide area].

Cold Weather Injury and Prevention

A common injury forcing AR teams to drop from a race is hypothermia (even in summer - in fact the most typical scenario involves rain and temperatures in the 50s). Since this is a potentially life threatening condition, its important to recognize its causes and prevention, as well as the symptoms and treatment. This article includes information on prevention and treatment of hypothermia, frostbite, and other cold weather emergencies.
