This race took place on May 17, 2003. Below are the instructions if you would like to do it yourself. You'll need the Squaw Pass USGS quad map. Or, you can print your own map.

Whole Course
If you want to do the whole course, start at the lower lot for Elk Meadows. Take I-70 to Evergreen Parkway, exit 252. Follow hwy 74 ~4mi to Lewis Ridge Road. Turn right at the light at the bottom of the hill, then right into the lot. You'll need bike locks. Lock your bike to a tree at CP1; there are some good places on the SW side of the intersection. Skip CP2 and the rappel. If you're printing your own map, start around Witter Gulch and use the boundaries below. You'll also need the Elk Meadow Open Space trail map. You can pick that up at the trailhead by the lot.
E-467000, Krinder Peak
W-460000, Mount Judge
N-4395500, Beaver Brook Canyon, Shaffer Hill
S-4388000. Krinder Peak

Note: The first place team took 5-1/2 hrs; the last team took 11 hrs.

Orienteering section only
If you are only doing the orienteering section, start at CP1, the intersection of Witter Gulch and hwy 103 (Squaw Pass Rd). Take I-70 to Evergreen Parkway. Go 2.5mi to squaw Pass Rd, hwy 103. Turn right and drive 6.5mi to Witter Gulch. Start and finish at CP1. If you're printing your own map, use the following boundaries:
E-464000, Forsberg Park
W-460500, W of Mount Judge
N-4395000, 8916' peak S of Beaver Brook Canyon
S-4391000. Snyder Mountain

Note: The first place team took about 2 hrs on the orienteering sections. A few teams took around 5 hrs.

Plot the checkpoints (CPs) using the UTM data and description below. UTMs use NAD27 datum. CPs are marked by white, plastic foam picnic plates. There's a 4 digit code written on the plates. The codes are 2 letters and two numbers; e.g., "AB01." The code is written in red permanent ink both directly on the plate, and on yellow duct tape stuck to the plate. The plates are tied to trees with twine. All are on the south side of the tree. The CPs are also marked with pink surveyor tape. The CP# and code are written on the ends of the tape.

Bring pen/pencil to record the codes on the form below. Report your time, which course you did (ether the orienteering section only or the whole course), and the codes to me, Adam Feerst. Please put "FAWAP" in the subject line.

For those of you infamiliar with orienteering terms:
Reentrant - A gully or watercourse, maybe dry.
Spur - A ridge line. The opposite of a reentrant.
Terrace - A flat section on the side of a hill or off a spur.

Safety Note: The orienteering section is remote. It is very unlikey that someone will come by to rescue you if you are injured. I don't think the cell coverage is good there. There was a mountain lion attack not too far from the area 6 or 7 years ago. Be smart. Be safe. Be careful. Bring a first aid kit. If you are going alone, let someone know where you are and when you'll be back.
