October 16-17, 2004 - Near Boulder, Colorado

General Info | Disciplines | Required Gear | Registration

Michael Ciavatta is organizing a NO FAWAP in the Boulder area for October. This NO FAWAP course (no "Fees, Aid, Whining, Awards, or Permits") will be approximately 70 miles, and may take up to 18+ hours to complete, depending on fitness levels and navigation skills. It will include flatwater paddling, mountain biking, trekking, and navigation throughout.

Note of Caution: unlike a race with a number of volunteers, be prepared to have to care for yourself during long stretches of the FAWAP. Weather extremes will be a factor, especially in October.

If you have any questions, please contact the organizer

General Information

  • Start Location: Near Boulder

  • Start Time: Saturday, October 16, 2004. Pre-race briefing, maps, gear check, etc. at 10:00 AM, start will be at 12:00 noon.

  • Teams: 4-person, 3-person, or 2-person.

  • Support crews: Required. Note: all the TAs are easily accessible (high clearance vehicle will NOT be needed).

  • Length: The course will take 18+ hours to complete.

  • Cost: As a NO FAWAP event, there is no charge. Feel free to make a donation to FROG if you wish!

  • Volunteers: We can definitely use your help! Please contact the organizer if you'd like to volunteer.

  • Notes: This event is not officially a race (no Backyard Challenge is). It is a training event that participants choose to do of their own free will, recognizing all inherent dangers and taking all responsibility for anything that may occur. All participants are expected to be self-reliant. Permits have not been sought from any land managers.

Disciplines

  • Flatwater Paddling: This will include a portaging section of about two miles. You may bring a wheel or other device if you choose to help you tote your boat(s).

  • Mountain Biking

  • Trekking: The trekking section includes high altitude areas that already have snow (as a hint: trail running shoes may not be the best choice).

  • Navigation: Participants should be familiar with basic navigation skills in the backcountry. They should know how to read a topographical map, plot UTM coordinates, adjust for the difference between magnetic and true north (declination), and follow a bearing.
