August 22, 2004 - Boulder, Colorado

General Info | Disciplines | Required Gear | Registration

Michael Ciavatta is organizing BYC-11, aka "Where's Bald-O?". This BYC will be geared to newbie adventure racers, with relatively short distances and not quite difficult navigation. It will include mountain biking, trekking, and navigation throughout. If you have any questions, please contact the organizer

General Information

  • Start Location: Switzerland Trail parking lot, Boulder. Take Canyon Blvd west out of Boulder. Take a right on Sugarloaf Road. Go approximately 4 miles, look for Sugarloaf Mountain Road on the right and take that about 1 mile to the parking area.

  • Start Time: Sunday, August 22, 2004. Optional pre-race navigation clinic at 8:30 AM. Start at 9:00 AM.

  • Teams: 4-person, 3-person, 2-person, or solo.

  • Support crews: None.

  • Length: The course will take 4 to 6+ hours to complete, and it is designed for newbie racers.

  • Cost: Suggested $5.00 per person donation. This helps cover club insurance, web hosting, and maps for the event.

  • Volunteers: We can definitely use your help! Please contact the organizer if you'd like to volunteer.

  • Notes: This event is not officially a race (no Backyard Challenge is). It is a training event that participants choose to do of their own free will, recognizing all inherent dangers and taking all responsibility for anything that may occur. All participants are expected to be self-reliant. Permits have not been sought from any land managers.

Disciplines

  • Bike: The bike course will include a mix of single track, forest service road, pavement, and a possible bikewhack.

  • Trek: The course includes trekking both on and off trail.

  • Navigation: Participants should be familiar with basic navigation skills in the backcountry. They should know how to read a topographical map, plot UTM coordinates, adjust for the difference between magnetic and true north (declination), and follow a bearing.

The following gear is required for all participants. Expect random gear checks throughout the event, and time penalties for missing items.
